In year 1908, 1,200 sets of Goodyear Tires were sold to Henry Ford for the manufacture of Ford Model T automobiles, which proved to be a sensation among contemporary middle-class consumers. Since then, the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has been recognized throughout the world as an American industrial icon, which played a major role in key moments of human history and life since its founding in 1898.
Goodyear is undoubtedly a key player in automotive revolution in the 20th century. In year 1908, Goodyear Tires were adopted to fit into Ford's Model T automobiles, which was regarded as the first affordable automobile that opened up a new world for the ordinary middle-class American. Ever since, Goodyear has been part of and has contributed to the development of modern society through groundbreaking achievements and product offerings, while continuing to innovate and propel mobility revolution.

1971First moon tires
on a modular equipment transporter
Year 1971 marked another milestone for Goodyear, as, with its XLT tires, Goodyear historically became the first tire brand ever used on the moon with Apollo 14's MET (Modularized Equipment Transporter) and The US's NASA turned to Goodyear for the tires needed for the rover that touched down on the moon. It was an engineering problem with incredibly challenging conditions that Goodyear's intrepid team eventually resolved: differing levels of atmospheric pressure, a complete lack of air, and widely varying temperatures from day to night.
In 1971's historical Apollo 14 mission to the moon, Goodyear played a key role by developing the first set of tires, Goodyear's XLT tires, to accompany Apollo 14's MET (Modularized Equipment Transporter) to land on the moon. Following the success of Apollo 14 mission, US's NASA continued to rely on Goodyear's capabilities. In 2009, Goodyear and NASA mutually invent "Spring Tire" for the moon - an energy-efficient tire that would not go flat.

1983First radial tires
approved by FAA* for commercial aircraft
Aviation really took off in 1909, six years after the first flight, when Goodyear created the first tires ever to be used for airplanes, which had used cumbersome sleds previously. The Goodyear Wing Aeroplane tire was built by the company's engineers to be lightweight, to resist punctures, and to be easy to remove. The tire proved to be a success, and airplanes have been using specially made tires ever since.

Goodyear did not stop innovating after inventing the first aviation tire however, going on to create such products as the first retreadable tire, in 1927, the Flight Eagle tire, designed for smaller business jets in the 1970s, and, in the 1980s, the first FAA*-approved radial tire for flights. Today, Goodyear remains one of the world's largest suppliers of aviation tires for commercial, military and general aviation aircraft.

In 1998, Goodyear became the first tire company to win 368 Grand Prix races, showcasing the wide variety of cars and teams that rely on Goodyear for racing success.
Goodyear has been at the forefront of tire innovation for many years and now produce more than 100,000 tires for NASCAR's top three series every year. Each tire is custom-built by associates in Akron, Ohio. The depth of the relationship has been built on competition, shared passion and brand growth for the two organizations. 2017Innovative use of Soybean oil-based
rubber compound in tires
The first commercial use of a new soybean oil-based rubber compound is helping Goodyear enhance tire performance in dry, wet and winter conditions. A Goodyear team of scientists and engineers created a tread compound, or formulation, using soybean oil, which is naturally derived, cost-effective, carbon-neutral and renewable. By employing soybean oil in tires, Goodyear found a new way to keep the rubber compound pliable in changing temperatures, a key performance achievement in maintaining and enhancing the vehicle's grip on the road surface.
Goodyear's tests have shown rubber made with soybean oil mixes more easily in the silica-reinforced compounds used in manufacturing certain tires. This also improves manufacturing efficiency and reduces energy consumption. The commercialization of soybean oil in tires as the latest technology breakthrough by Goodyear builds on the company's other recent innovations, such as the use of silica derived from rice husk ash, another component Goodyear is using in certain consumer tires, along with current and past uses of components such as carbon fiber, DuPont™ Kevlar®, volcanic sand and more.

2017First Eagle 360 Urban Concept Tires

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has revealed innovative new Eagle-360 concept tire at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, which is designed to enable the future of mobility. The Eagle-360, a spherical-shaped design concept tire, was designed with key features of maneuverability, connectivity and biomimicry for autonomous mobility and allows the car to move in all directions, contributing to safety for passengers, as well as coping with space limitations such as tight parking lots or city streets. It contains embedded sensors further increase safety by communicating road and weather conditions to the vehicle control system and other nearby cars, while tread and tire pressure monitoring technology regulate even wear of the 360-degree tire to extend mileage. Though currently a future concept tire, the Eagle-360 represent an essential aspect of Goodyear’s innovation strategy and its vision for smart and safe mobility.
At the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, Goodyear showcased the new and emerging technologies in its latest concept tires, imagined for the future of the automotive industry. In the evolving mobility ecosystem, defined by the transition to driverless vehicles and shared mobility in urban centers, Goodyear aims to revolutionize the interaction between tires, vehicles and their surroundings. Its new concepts – the spherical-shaped Eagle 360 Urban and the IntelliGrip Urban smart tire – apply emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) connectivity to help the autonomous vehicles of the future navigate the millions of possible unknowns we face in every day driving scenarios.
